Am gestrigen Dienstag kam die Nachricht, dass die schwedischen Strafverfolgungsbehörden ihre Voruntersuchungen im Fall Assange nach nunmehr 9 Jahren und 3 Monaten zum dritten Mal eingestellt haben. Am Tag zuvor hatte es im Auslieferungsverfahren der USA gegen Julian Assange eine weitere Anhörung zu Verfahrensfragen gegeben, in der die Richterin verlautbarte, dass sie nicht für seine Haftbedingungen zuständig sei. Am 14.11.2019 von 8 Uhr 30 bis 11 Uhr luden GUE/NGL (The Left in the European Parliament, zu Deutsch: Konföderale Fraktion der Vereinten Europäischen Linken/Nordischen Grünen Linken) zur Konferenz «Journalism Is Not A Crime» im Europäischen Parlament in Brüssel ein, um auf den historischen Fall für die Pressefreiheit von Julian Assange und somit auf die Zukunft europäischer Demokratien aufmerksam zu machen.

Excellency,I have the honour to address you in my capacity as Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution 34/19.In reference to my communication sent on 28 May (SWE 2/2019)on the case of Mr. Julian Assange, I would like to thank your Excellency’s Government for the response dated 12 July 2019. While I sincerely appreciate the explanations provided and views expressed by your Excellency’s Government, they do not alleviate myserious concerns with regard to the implementation, in this case, of Sweden’s obligations in relation to the prohibition against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
