Senators Fear Trump Administration Nuclear Posture Review Policies “Raise the

Real Possibility of Nuclear Conflict”

16 Senators urge President Trump to reconsider efforts that would undermine

decades of U.S. nonproliferation leadership by building new nuclear weapons,

lowering threshold for use

PNND Co-President Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), along with Senators Dianne

Feinstein (D-Calif.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) have

led a dozen of their Senate colleagues in calling on President Donald Trump to

reconsider policies outlined in a leaked draft of its Nuclear Posture Review

(NPR). They criticize the NPR for outlining the development of new nuclear

weapons and reintroduction of Cold War-era weapons systems that would be

unnecessary and destabilizing.

In a letter sent to President Trump

<https://www.markey.senate.gov/download/letter-on-nuclear-posture-review>, the

Senators write that taking these steps would increase America’s nuclear

warfighting capability and raise the chances of a miscalculation that could lead

to a nuclear exchange. The Senators also expressed concern that the new weapons

and missions would require additional funding beyond the $1.7 trillion the

Congressional Budget Office estimates it would cost to modernize existing U.S.

nuclear forces.

The Senators write to President Trump that “/In addition to being fiscally

irresponsible, your policies run counter to America’s obligations under the 1968

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Indeed, reports indicate that your NPR

at present hardly mentions the NPT and neglects to mention altogether our

Article VI commitment to ‘*pursue negotiations in good faith on effective

measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to

nuclear disarmament*.’”/

Other senators signing the letter include Senators Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Tina

Smith (D-Minn.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), Patty

Murray (D-Wash.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Cory Booker

(D-N.J.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Kristen Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Kamala Harris

(D-Calif.), and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.).

Senator Markey (D-Mass.):  „A Roadmap for Nuclear War“

“The reported contents of the Trump administration’s forthcoming Nuclear Posture Review are a roadmap for nuclear war,” said Senator Markey. “President Trump’s fixation on the size of his ‘nuclear button’ is reflected in a document that outlines an unnecessary expansion of America’s nuclear arsenal. Simply put, President Trump wants new nuclear weapons and more ways to use them. We don’t need new nuclear weapons, ‘low yield’ or otherwise, and we certainly should not be creating more ambiguity about the military scenarios in which we might use our nuclear weapons.
